SVD - Celebrating 100 Years

Some of the ethnic chaplaincies we minister to: W ith the end of the Second Word War in 1945, a significant number of Divine Word Missionaries who had been freed from Japanese occupation in PNG came to Australia for recuperation. Because they could not travel back to their home countries they began to serve in many dioceses in Australia especially in Sydney and Brisbane. The SVDs soon began to notice that there was a need for chaplains especially among the various migrant ethnic communities. Because of the multicultural diversity of the SVD members in Australia, chaplains for the migrant communities in Australia were eagerly sought after. While we started our outreach to PNG, we now have strong bonds of cooperation with many countries in Asia, as a result of which, many ethnic chaplains were required and because of our multiculturality we were able to take up these ministries to assist migrants to settle down and integrate into the local community and church.
