In each of the four gospels there are wonderful resurrection stories in which we see the early followers of Christ struggling to grasp the fact and the meaning of the resurrection of Christ.
On one or other occasion, Christ criticises them for their unbelief: “Why are doubts arising in your hearts? Look at my hands and my feet; yes, it is I indeed. Touch me and see for yourselves” (Jn 24:38, 39).

But even then, the radiant joy that possessed them was beyond their comprehension!
They needed time to really understand what it all meant and where to from here.
Remember what they had been through -- the mounting intrigue and opposition to Jesus, the sadness of farewell and foreboding within the final paschal meal, the agony in the garden, the betrayal of Judas, the indignity of the trial, the taunting of the crowd, and then the crucifixion on Calvary.
And then, inexplicably, He is risen and has appeared to Simon (Lk. 24:35).
It is necessary for us to acknowledge the struggle of the early followers of Christ to take it all in — the surprise that Christ had risen, for we too are no different.
We have our own doubts and difficulties in sustaining faith, hope, and joy in face of struggle, be they personal or of the family, friends or relatives. It’s part of our daily bread.
But over time, through the grace and gift of the Spirit and our own cooperation, we know the joy and the power of the Spirit within our lives.
It is something we cannot deny.
It is as though there has been a transformation within us.
We see with different eyes.
We are more open and welcoming to the mystery of love and life and communion that surrounds us every day, in every moment. That in fact is part of us!
The infinite love that possessed the human heart of Jesus as displayed for us in the Mystery of Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter Sunday, will penetrate through all time and space, but for today, most importantly, in your life and mine.
May we grow more aware of the fact and the meaning of the resurrection in our own lives; and in that awareness, awaken to the radiant joy and the power of divine love that is at the heart of our lives and of the life of the entire universe.
