Pentecost

Written by

One of the biggest temptations amongst modern day Christians is to think exclusively about the Holy Spirit, the third person of the Holy Triune God, as if they have some secret strategies of controlling and directing her movements within and without the boundaries of their churches.

The Ascension

Written by

The Ascension must have been an astonishing event. As an actual happening it is attested in the Gospels of Mark and Luke, as well as in the Acts of the Apostles.

We are much loved! - A reflection

You-are-loved---150On the island of Flores, where I live, there is a home for people with special physical and mental needs. Run by the Holy Spirit Missionary Sisters, it is by the sea in the town of Labuan Bajo on the western tip of the island.

Just before Easter I visited the home. I was overwhelmed by the joy of the residents.

The story of the Lord's appearance to the two disciples on the road to Emmaus is probably one of the best developed and deeply insightful of the appearance stories in the Gospels.

2nd Sunday of Easter - 2014

Today we celebrate not only the Octave of Easter and Divine Mercy Sunday but we also celebrate the canonisation of two outstanding popes of the last century.

Faithbook---150Ten days before Easter a friend of mine started to post the countdown towards the Feast of the Resurrection on his Facebook page. Somehow I was struck by this simple gesture as it reminded me to ponder a bit deeper on the Feast. In actual fact, we were already given 40 days of Lent for the proper preparation which also marks the importance of these days.

May I just invite you to pause a moment and to ask yourself: Now, after the feast, how do I feel the joy of Easter?

As Christians everywhere prepare to commemorate the triumphant entry of Jesus into Jerusalem and enter into Holy Week, I could not help but think of the paradox of these upcoming religious celebrations almost colliding with one of humanities darkest days.

In the National Rugby League’s (NRL) Footy Show, a slightly irreverent show about the players of the NRL, they have a segment where they ask the wives or girlfriends of the NRL players questions and then try to match their answers with their partner’s.

'Missing in Mark Foy's' - A Lenten Reflection

Written by

Mark Foys entrance---150When I was a pre-school child, my mother used to take my sister, Yvonne, and I shopping in Mark Foy's. Mark Foy's was a big, exciting department store diagonally opposite the Hyde Park entrance to Museum Station in Sydney's CBD. The building was a marvel to behold from the outside. With its turrets and decorative finishes, it looked a bit like Uncle Scrooge McDuck's mansion. However, it was the interior that really captured the imagination of a little three-year old boy: All the floors in the store opened onto a big, central atrium, and, reaching from the basement to the top floor stood an aviary full of live birds, budgerigars, I think. What a place to let one's imagination run wild! And on one visit to Mark Foy's, my imagination really did run wild: I got lost.
